Western Alamance' Patterson wins regional

May 11, 2008 12:39 am

Western Alamance's Gregory Patterson rolled past Western Guilford's Jason Hull 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday to capture the Class 3-A Mideast Regional singles title at Burlington Tennis Center.

In the process, Patterson secured a top seed in the Class 3-A individual state championship that starts later this week. He overcame Southern Lee's Pete Conaty 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in Saturday's semifinal round before taking care of Hull in short order.

The Williams doubles team of Adam Blaser and Ross Powell won the doubles portion of the Mideast Regional. They outlasted Western Alamance's Rajiv Dinakaran and Jared Bryant 6-4, 6-7, 6-0 in the final.

Blaser and Powell blanked Western Alamance's Chris Sparks and Brendan Byers 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Dinakaran and Bryant endured a match of nearly three hours to advance to the final. They battled past Western Guilford's Patrick Lewis and Brandon Reid 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 in doing so.

Class 2-A
At Snow Hill, Michael Reilly of Cardinal Gibbons defeated Graham's Tyler Cook 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 in the semifinals of the Class 2-A individual regionals at Greene Central High School.

Cook, the No. 2 seed in the regional, then battled through severe cramping to beat third-seeded Amir Najmabadi of Carrboro 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in the consolation final.

The match lasted approximately three hours, with both players having to take a medical timeout each due to the warm weather conditions.

"It was one of the gutsiest things I have ever seen in my life," Graham coach Jay Cook said. "Tyler battled through the heat and fatigue in that consolation final. Both players were so tired."

No. 1 seed Will Rollinson of Cardinal Gibbons, a two-time defending state champion, defeated his teammate Reilly 6-2, 6-1 in the regional championship.

Cook will participate in next Friday's Class 2-A individual state championships at Cary Tennis Center. He lost to Rollinson in last year's state championship match.
