Weather proves tricky for Class 3-A field
FOX FIRE VILLAGE - En route to his individual title at the Class 3-A golf championship at Fox Fire Resort and Country Club, Williams High School freshman Robert Register looked the part of a PGA pro clad in dapper black slacks.
As one of two players wearing long pants, Register wasn't trying to make any sort of a fashion statement. Instead, he was bracing for what had already been a strange tournament with regards to weather.
"I thought it was going to be a little colder," Register said.
Monday's first round was plagued by high winds and temperatures that dipped into the 50s, wreaking havoc on scores.
Register fired even par in the first round while only one golfer, Charlotte Catholic's Michael Muscatell, broke into red numbers.
By Tuesday, the sun had broken through and the wind had died down somewhat, but the conditions were far from perfect.
"(Monday) was pretty windy," Williams junior Saxton Nicholson said. "(Tuesday) it wasn't so bad. But the greens were a little bit fuzzier, that made them a little slower."
Register's second-round score of 1-over par 73 won the tournament while his Williams teammates fought hard to find scores they were happy with.
"The conditions were a lot better (Monday)," Williams senior Nelson Nance said. "It was very windy and it was hard to judge distances."
FAMILY TRADITION: Register isn't the only athlete in his family who has suited up for Williams. His father, Robert Register Sr., was a standout tennis player for the Bulldogs, winning a sectional singles title in 1978.
TITLE HISTORY: Outside of Williams' six individual titles, Alamance County can claim three other individual championships. Steve Walker of Southern Alamance won championships in 1966 and 1968 while Ronnie Thomas of nowdefunct Burlington High School won the title in 1955.
